Ten-pin bowling in Naguru Go-down, Kampala - August 2008

We visited a community on Naguru Hill on a Sunday afternoon. On a previous visit we noticed the children entertaining themselves with bits of wood, metal and plastic. While these simple games enhance the children's creativity and imaginations, we wanted to give them the opportunity to play some of the games that children in the developed world are fortunate enough to enjoy. We selected a game that all of the children can play together, doesn't require expensive equipment and enriches their minds as well as their playful spirits. Using ten recycled 1.5 liter plastic bottles, weighted with soil, and a football we purchased from the local market we brought ten-pin bowling to the Naguru Go-down community. We also purchased and prepared a small scoreboard to encourage the kids to think numerically and to make addition enjoyable. After teaching the children the rules, and playing one game with them, we left the equipment in their hands and walked away with a much better understanding of this vibrant, tight-knit community. After seeing the joy that this simple game brought to these children and the insight it gave us into their community our aim is to replicate this and other similar games in other communities around the country.
