90% of Uganda's population have no access to electricity in their homes. Due to its proximity to the equator the sun sets at between 6pm and 7pm all year round. During the hours of darkness 90% of Ugandan households use kerosene burners as their only source of light.
Enlighten Africa aims to replace these primative fuel burners with energy efficient solar LED lanterns. While some of Uganda's working poor can afford to purchase one of our lanterns there are many families that do not have the financial means to replace their burners.
There are many disadvantages of the kerosene burners:
We currently have 60 families that have applied to our Shine the Light Campaign in the hope of receving a wind-up lantern from a generous sponsor. Our lanterns are of the highest quality and are made to last up to ten years without the need to buy batteries or change any bulbs. In ten years the average Ugandan family will spend approximately $750 on each kerosene burner they own.
For only $20 you can provide a family with a high quality solar-crank LED lantern which should last for many years. Not only will you be overcoming the above listed health, educational and environmental issues, but the $75 that you save the family each year will go a long way towards other necessary expenses. In return for your kind donation you will receive a digital photo and detailed descriptions of the family you are supporting, along with annual updates from the family.
